If your word opens just fine and creates a blank template in safe mode then what is most likely the issue is that an add-on is causing the issue. After that it’s a matter of systematically going through the add-ins and turning them off until it opens and works without issue.
If that doesn’t work you could always try to roll back the computer to a date in the past when it worked normally. I have had an issue similar to this. I have been working with Microsoft, and it is now elevated to senior engineers there. I have not heard from them in about a week, so I am sure they’re stumped just like I was. I ended up just giving the user a new imaged Laptop and migrating everything over. Was easier than waiting to hear from Microsoft.

I tried all of the above and nothing worked. Finally I uninstalled the entire suite, cleaned up any file fragments, and searched the registry for any registry keys left over after the uninstall and deleted them. I then did a re-install and vuala! It must’ve been one of the registry keys I deleted because I had done an uninstall earlier without any luck. Good to go now!
